Kinky Boots

Winner of the Tony for Best Musical in 2013, “Kinky Boots” made it’s way to San Francisco, California this month.  I honestly didn’t know what to expect other than to hear some fun music – after all, the score was written by none other than Cyndi Lauper!

The story is about a man trying to save his failing family shoe business after the untimely death of his father.  To do this, he needed to find a “niche” for the business to survive.  Upon a chance meeting with a drag queen he tries to rescue from a street fight, he finds that “niche” by making high healed boots for drag queens.  The story had themes of true beauty, unconditional love, accepting others for who they are all entwined in a way that was touching but not cheesy.  It was great.

I went to see the Sunday matinee and the lead role of “Lola” was played by the understudy J. Harrison Ghee.  All I can say is WOW.  He did a FANTASTIC job – his voice and acting were SPOT ON and everyone around me was equally impressed.  BRAVO.

The rest of the cast was also fantastic, as evident by the entire audience in the Orpheum Theatre rising to a standing ovation after the finale number.  The musical was entertaining with really fun music and a captivating story line.  Really one of the best I have seen in a long time.
