da fish house

Fresh seafood is not a shortage in Hawaii and a great place for that on the Big Island is Da Fish House Lunch Wagon.  Before I left on this trip, I read about Da Fish House on Yelp© and Trip Advisor© but was unclear on how the restaurant was set up or located.  To make it simple for you, it is located in Kawaihae right across the street from Anuenue Shaved Ice, “the best on the island”.  You head north up on highway 19 and then go left at the fork, the opposite direction of Waimea.

Da Fish House sells both fresh fish to take home to cook as well as some cold options to eat right away:IMG_9333

like poke!

IMG_9335  The chunks of tuna were more than generous and the sauce had a nicely flavored soy base with just a hint of heat.

The hot food is served up in their truck outside:

With fish burgers, fish and chips and a variety of sides to choose from, I got their fish tacos with a side of macaroni salad:

IMG_9337  The macaroni salad was classic – mayo and noodles.  It somehow always tastes better in Hawaii. 🙂  The fish in the tacos was breaded and fried with some great spice.  Served in full sized white tortillas toasted crisp, the fillings were more more American than Mexican – with olives, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, and guacamole.  I ended up taking out all the fillings and just ate the fried fish, guacamole and tortilla.  That was quite yummy.

To walk off our meal, we strolled around the pier across the way.  There are sail boats to rent and take out as well as a company that leads some scuba nearby if you are up for more of adventure after lunch. 🙂

Out of the way from most tourist destinations, but definitely worth the treck!
