puako lava and fish ponds

Puako park on the Big Island of Hawaii is a really cool area to walk around.  Accessible from both the Mauna Lani Resort or the Fairmont Orchid, the general public can also access this area via a public parking lot, complete with a publicv restroom!  From the lot, you can walk through a field of lava rocks to the ocean.

The lava flow is still preserved!

Continuing on, you get to the Kalahuipua’a fish ponds:

With fresh water springs supplying the water, fish were once farmed here by Hawaiian royalty:IMG_9268 See the fish inside?!?!

Now, they are preserved for it’s beauty

And a nice stroll on the way to the beach:

Further down, there are petroglyphs in the lava rocks but it was so hot on this day, we headed to the beach instead.  Oh, well – I guess that just means we have to go back!
