viks chaat

A good friend of mine grabbed lunch at Vik’s Chaat in Berkeley, California last weekend.  Known for their variety of Indian Street food, we ordered a large variety to share and to take home for later.

We started out with mango lassis and a lychee juice:

We got things started with the Dahi Batata Puri:

image  Puris are deep-fried unleavened bread, which are served here with yogurt and tamarind chutney.  Loved the sauce here and I only wished there were more servings of puri in the dish!

Aloo Tikki is a dish of crispy potato patties with masala sauce and chutneys:

image  What a creative way of serving up these flavors!  Tikki masala is a soft and mushy dish but I loved the crispiness of the potato skin here!

I do enjoy Dosas, which are savory crepes, filled with yummy goodness:

image  We got ours with a spicy potato mixture inside, that went great with the sambar (vegetable curry) and chutneys on the side.

We were running out of room on the table and so we combined the next two dishes onto one tray.  I love samosas and theirs are fantastic.  I’m a big fan of their Koliwada Fish – spicy and hot on the outside but delicate and fresh on the inside.

My favorite is their Bhel Puri, which is a dish made of rice puffs, potatoes, onions and chutneys:

For the road, I got their chicken and vegetable Kathis to go:

image  It’s like a wrap sandwich with paratha bread.  The chicken one was SUPER spicy but both are really flavorful.

I also got their paratha filled with gobi, or cauliflower, to go:
